hi all,
sorry for the delay!
(been working hard to get ogg theora video working reliably and  
"mod_h264_streaming" for .mp4s too over here 8-)

that totally worked.
i just didn't know to do the "autogen.sh"
and note (FWIW) it's not mentioned in the "INSTALL" file.

thanks for the help and sorry if this felt like a noob question
(i've done a lot of compiling from C sources, debian packages,
  and written C and C++ in my past lives;  but just didn't happen
  to have come across that kind of thing yet  8-)


BTW, the tools are working and starting to get used live in Internet  
Achive's
  creation of .ogv theora "derivative" movie files now, so yay, thanks
  for the great tools.  you are part of our
"campaign to make over 100K ogg theora videos online" here at
archive hopefully in time for FF 3.1 going live 8-)
(we are using oggzrip right now and will be using oggz-chop soon)
